Didn’t John Dunmore Lang found this place? Scots Church Sydney’s story starts with him. The first Presbyterian Church in Sydney. It stands as a testament to faith and resilience.
Let’s step back to the early 19th century. Presbyterianism arrived in Australia. It came with members from Great Britain. They sought a place to worship. They desired to build a community.
John Dunmore Lang arrived in 1823. He was a man of strong convictions. He planted the church independent of colonial authorities. Lang was the first Christian minister not on the government payroll. This bold move set the tone for the church’s future.
The original Scots Church opened in 1826. It was a Norman-Gothic style building. It could seat 900 people. Lang served as the church minister until his death in 1878.
Lang was a controversial figure. He befriended convicts. He championed the rights of minorities. He sought to understand local indigenous people. He fearlessly preached against abuses and corruption. He even served as a Member of Parliament. He worked towards establishing schools. He wanted Sydney’s first university. He supported institutions for the poor.
By 1926, the NSW Government needed the land. They wanted it for the Sydney Harbour Bridge roadworks. They also needed it for Wynyard Station. The old Scots Church was resumed and demolished.
But the story doesn’t end there. A new church arose in 1929. It was built on the original site. It faced both Lang Park and Wynyard Park. The design was Inter-War Gothic Revival style.
The new Scots Church could accommodate 1,350 people. Tablets and monuments from the old church were incorporated. It became a popular venue. It hosted both ecclesiastic and secular activities.
However, the church faced challenges. It struggled with control of its own building. Legal disputes arose. The congregation even vacated the building in the 1970s.
By the 1990s, the building’s future was uncertain. Redevelopment proposals emerged. In 2001, the Presbyterian Church of New South Wales sold the site. A subsidiary of Westpoint Corporation bought it.
In 2005, the church was redeveloped. 148 apartments were built on top of it. The restoration faced leaky ceilings. It involved crumbling sandstone. It required repairing damaged timber and metalwork.
Despite these challenges, the restoration won awards. It won the 2006 MBA Construction Award. It also won the 2006 RAIA NSW Multiple Housing Award.
After years without an active congregation, a new church began in 2017. It was a multi-generational, multi-cultural church.
Today, Scots Church stands as a symbol of faith. It’s a symbol of resilience. It’s a symbol of community in the heart of Sydney. It builds on a rich heritage. This heritage dates back to 1827. It’s a heritage shaped by John Dunmore Lang. The church proclaims Christ. It grows disciples. It does it all for the glory of God.
