Overlooking the shimmering waters of Elizabeth Bay, Beale Park beckons with its grassy expanse and harbor views. Beale Park isn’t just a picturesque spot for a picnic. It holds a captivating history intertwined with Sydney’s grandest houses. Beale Park is nestled at the bottom of Ithaca Road. It offers a playground, public art, and even designated off-leash times for furry friends. Beale Park’s history dates back to the original 1831 grant of the Elizabeth Bay Estate to Colonial Secretary Alexander Macleay. The park’s very name honors John Beare, an alderman who served from 1881 to 1899. In 1901, James William Macarthur-Onslow, a descendant of Macleay, expanded Beale Park by transferring land to the Council. Further additions came in 1954 and 1980, incorporating portions of neighboring estates. One such addition, now known as Kings Cross Rotary Park, was once part of the gardens of the iconic ‘Boomerang’ house. Beale Park boasts more than just green space. Admire “The Specimen Jar” and the Beare Park canopy fountain, a testament to the park’s dedication to public art. A stroll through Beale Park reveals remnants of its rich past. The brick paving and lion’s head drinking fountain near Kings Cross Rotary Park hint at the elegance of the former Boomerang Gardens. A seawall, built in 1901, speaks to the reclamation efforts that expanded the parkland. Even an octagonal pool, possibly dating back to the 1870s, can be found, now adorned with a spray fountain added in 1954. Beale Park also features a canopy fountain. This fountain is one of eight ornamental drinking fountains brought from Glasgow in 1870. It carries a biblical inscription from John 4:13-14, adding a touch of spiritual reflection to the park’s ambiance. As you leave Beale Park, take one last look at the majestic Washington palms near Ithaca Road and The Esplanade. These trees, likely remnants of Elizabeth Bay House grounds, serve as a living link to Sydney’s past and a reminder of the layered stories held within Beale Park.
