High atop Mount Ikiya stands Chomeiji Temple a place steeped in legend and history. This isn’t just any temple. Chomeiji Temple is said to be over 1400 years old. Legend says it all started with Takenouchi no Sukune a powerful politician. He carved a wish for long life into a willow tree. The wish came true. Sukune supposedly lived to be 300 years old. Centuries later Prince Shotoku discovered the carving. An old hermit guided him to create a Kannon statue from the very tree. This statue now resides in Chomeiji Temple.
