The scent of incense hangs heavy in the air. A familiar comfort. This is the Paróquia São Pio de Pietrelcina.
The Paróquia São Pio de Pietrelcina wasn’t always here. It began its journey much earlier. Cardinal Dom José Freire Falcão had a vision. A vision born from a personal grace. A grace he received through the intercession of Saint Pio of Pietrelcina. He desired a parish dedicated to this saint. He wanted it in São Paulo.
But it wasn’t a simple task. Saint Pio wasn’t yet canonized. Cardinal Falcão needed permission. Permission from the Congregation for Divine Worship. He requested to dedicate a parish to Padre Pio. The request was granted. Permission to celebrate his liturgical memory throughout the archdiocese was given.
Initially part of the Santa Terezinha Parish in Cruzeiro the temple already stood. Its patron saint was Saint Louis Guanella. On March 8 2001 everything changed. The Paróquia São Pio de Pietrelcina was officially created.
Father Angel Obradors Rosique became its first pastor. He guided the community for two years. Father Carlos Fernando Hernandez Sanchez succeeded him in 2003. Under his guidance much construction happened. Part of a new temple was built. A chapel of the Blessed Sacrament was added. The Dom José Freire Falcão parish center was built. This center would house pastoral groups and catechism classes. The parish temple was renovated and dedicated in 2017.
Father Fernando Alves de Sousa took over in 2018 as the third pastor. In December 2022 a significant event took place. The land deed was finalized. This deed secured the land for the new temple. This was a significant step forward for the Paróquia São Pio de Pietrelcina.
Today the Paróquia São Pio de Pietrelcina stands as a testament to faith perseverance and the unwavering dedication of its community. Its history is a story of growth and transformation. A story deeply rooted in the intercession of Saint Pio of Pietrelcina. A beautiful story told stone by stone prayer by prayer.
