Whispers of faith echo within the Wellington Islamic Centre. This unassuming building holds a rich history. It’s a testament to the enduring spirit of New Zealand’s Muslim community. The Wellington Islamic Centre stands as a beacon of unity and devotion.

The International Muslim Association of New Zealand (IMAN) recognized the growing need for a dedicated Islamic center in Wellington. In 1977, they considered a property at 326 The Terrace. However, challenges arose, delaying the realization of their vision. The dream persisted. On March 5, 1978, IMAN formed a Project Committee. This committee was tasked with exploring the possibilities of establishing a mosque and Islamic center. Three months later, progress was made. On June 11, 1978, a property on Daniel Street was identified as a potential site for the Wellington Islamic Centre.

By December 17, 1978, the property on Daniel Street was purchased. The Wellington City Council granted permission to convert the existing house into a proper Islamic center. The transformation began. Members of the community actively participated in discussions and plans for the center’s development. Their collective efforts shaped the Wellington Islamic Centre into the welcoming space it is today.

The completed Wellington Islamic Centre became a vital hub for the Muslim community. It provided a place for daily prayers, meetings, and educational activities. The center fostered a sense of belonging. It offered opportunities for spiritual growth and community engagement. The Wellington Islamic Centre stands as a symbol of resilience, faith, and the power of community.
