Hidden in plain sight, the Zdzisław Witwicki Plaque whispers tales of a life dedicated to art. This plaque commemorates Zdzisław Witwicki, a prominent Polish illustrator known for his whimsical characters and enduring contributions to children’s literature. Born in Pruszków near Warsaw in 1921, Witwicki’s artistic journey began amidst the tumultuous backdrop of World War II. He worked tirelessly as a railway laborer, supporting his family after his father’s tragic death at the very start of the war. This early experience shaped his resilience and deep appreciation for the simple joys of life, themes often reflected in his later works. After the war, despite the hardships he endured, Witwicki pursued his passion, studying at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. He honed his skills under the tutelage of Professor Tadeusz Kulisiewicz, graduating in 1955. While still a student, he began working at the Nasza Księgarnia publishing house. Initially seeing it as a temporary job, it unexpectedly became his artistic home for 34 years. The Zdzisław Witwicki Plaque is a testament to this prolific period, where he shaped the visual landscape of countless children’s books. Witwicki’s work extends far beyond the pages of Hałabała and Elemelek, his most beloved creations. He illustrated over 70 books, breathing life into stories by authors like Lucyna Krzemieniecka, Hanna Łochocka, and Maria Krueger. He became a key figure in the “Polish School of Illustration,” earning numerous awards and accolades for his distinct style and heartwarming characters. His art graced not just children’s books but also postcards, calendars, and even record covers, showcasing his versatility and enduring appeal. The Zdzisław Witwicki Plaque stands as a tribute to his indelible mark on Polish culture. He received the Prime Minister’s Award for Lifetime Achievement in 1983 and the prestigious Gloria Artis Medal in 2010. In a touching tribute, the Municipal Kindergarten No. 31 in Warsaw was named after him in 2008, where a permanent exhibition of his works continues to inspire young imaginations. Zdzisław Witwicki passed away in 2019 at the age of 98. His legacy, however, continues to thrive. Every time a child picks up a book featuring his charming illustrations, the spirit of the artist lives on.
