In 1870, a petition sparked the birth of the Council of the City of Ryde. This petition, signed by 201 local residents, called for the establishment of a municipal district. The Council of the City of Ryde was officially proclaimed on November 12, 1870, under the Municipalities Act of 1867. However, a boundary error necessitated a re-proclamation in 1872. The first council election took place on February 10, 1871. Edward Terry became the first mayor. He later represented Ryde in the New South Wales State Parliament. The initial Council Chambers were housed in the Old Wesleyan Chapel on Church Street. In 1894, Marsfield briefly separated to become its own municipality. It was renamed Eastwood in 1907 before being re-amalgamated with the Council of the City of Ryde in 1949. Early council priorities included road maintenance, surfacing, and rates. In 1872, with a population of 1,461, the council collected about $1,000 in rates. The 1906 Local Government Act spurred significant progress. By 1913, Mayor Anderson noted substantial improvements in roads, kerbing, guttering, and property values. The Ryde Bridge, started in 1933 and opened in 1935, was a financial triumph for the Council of the City of Ryde. Toll revenue paid for the bridge in just 13 years. It was then transferred to the Department of Main Roads. Post-World War II, the Council of the City of Ryde launched an ambitious housing scheme. Amidst material and housing shortages, the council borrowed around $5 million. This funded the construction of 593 homes and six shops. They also provided loans to 400 ratepayers for cottage construction. The 1950s saw increasing urbanization. The establishment of Macquarie University in the 1960s led to the development of technology parks in North Ryde. Former poultry farms and orchards transformed into the modern technological hubs we see today. The Council of the City of Ryde achieved city status in 1992, marking the bicentenary of the first land grants in the area. The Council of the City of Ryde continues to serve its residents. It offers a range of community services, programs, and events.
