Wiley H Bates High School is named after Wiley H. Bates. He was a man born into slavery. After the Civil War, he became a successful businessman and philanthropist. Bates donated 500 dollars towards the purchase of land for the original high school.

Wiley Bates himself never had a formal education. He was self-taught. He understood the importance of education. His donation was instrumental in establishing the first and only high school for African Americans in Anne Arundel County.

Until the mid-1960s Wiley H Bates High School served as the only high school for African Americans here. This changed after the Supreme Court’s decision in Brown v. Board of Education. Starting in 1966, the building became an integrated middle school. It eventually closed in 1981 due to its age and condition.

Wiley H Bates High School was more than just a school. It was a place of excellence. Dedicated teachers demanded the best from their students. The school nurtured a great band, a standout chorus, and a nationally ranked football team.

The historical and cultural significance of Wiley H Bates High School was recognized in 1986. It was placed on the National Register of Historic Places. This act solidified its importance in Maryland history.

For years the Wiley H Bates High School building sat unused. In 2006, a collaborative effort led to its renovation. The project cost 27 million dollars. Funding came from 13 different public and private sources. The renovation followed strict guidelines to preserve the building’s original character.

Today, the Wiley H Bates Heritage Park stands here. It includes affordable senior housing, a senior center, a Boys and Girls Club and athletic fields. The Legacy Center tells the story of Wiley Bates and the school’s achievements.

Wiley H Bates’s story is one of perseverance and dedication. Born into slavery he became a successful businessman and community leader. He served as an alderman in Annapolis. He championed education for African American children. His legacy lives on in this building. It stands as a testament to his vision and generosity. Wiley H Bates High School remains a symbol of hope and achievement for generations to come.
