“A bronze hedgehog? With a snake?” you might ask, standing here at the Igelbrunnen. Yes, indeed. This quirky fountain, tucked away in Cologne’s Rheinpark, is more than just a source of water. It’s a charming piece of art with a story to tell. Igelbrunnen, which translates to “Hedgehog Fountain”, is officially known as “Hedgehog with Snake”. This whimsical sculpture was created by the artist Fritz Bernuth in 1960. The Igelbrunnen quickly found its home in the Rheinpark’s rose garden, perched atop a stone plinth. Bernuth’s inspiration came from ancient models. His hedgehog holds a coiled snake in its mouth, and the water flows, rather unexpectedly, from the snake’s mouth. Upon its installation, the Igelbrunnen held a special distinction. It was the only drinking water fountain in the entire Rheinpark. Imagine parched park-goers, seeking refreshment from this unique bronze creature. It must have become a beloved meeting point, a place to pause and admire the art while quenching one’s thirst. The Igelbrunnen continues to charm visitors in the Rheinpark today, a testament to Bernuth’s whimsical vision and a unique landmark in Cologne.
