Fifty feet high, stainless-steel masts reach for the sky. This is the Sky Column Sculpture. It stands near the Long Bridge Aquatics & Fitness Center. Welcome to a place where art and environment meet.

The Sky Column Sculpture embodies ephemeral monumentality. Artist Douglas Hollis designed it. The Arlington County Board commissioned the Sky Column Sculpture. The project’s budget was over half a million dollars.

Installed in 2021, the Sky Column Sculpture reflects its surroundings. Its mirror-polished surface captures light and wind. This creates a mirage-like effect. From afar, it acts as a beacon. It draws people to the park and aquatic center.

The Sky Column Sculpture consists of tapered stainless-steel tubing. These masts form a column. They appear to merge with the sky. The artwork responds to changing light. It quivers with the wind.

At night, the Sky Column Sculpture transforms. Up-lights at its base brighten and dim. They react to real-time wind variations. This mesmerizing display enhances its appeal.

Beyond Concrete implemented the decorative concrete work. They used Bomanite Revealed for the project. This system provides full exposure of decorative aggregates. Concentric bands of color were installed. The bands graduate from dark to light gray.

The Sky Column Sculpture reminds us of interconnectedness. It highlights our ability to nurture life. This is especially important when facing challenges. Pandemics and climate change are examples.

Douglas Hollis also created Wave Arbor at Long Bridge Park in 2011. His Sky Column Sculpture is a testament to public art. It enriches Arlington County’s visual landscape. The Sky Column Sculpture stands as a reminder. Community collaboration is vital. It offers a gathering place and a symbol of resilience.

Bomanite Revealed ensures durability. It is suitable for exterior applications. It offers improved wear resistance. The surface is pre-aged, ensuring a low life cycle cost.

Imagine the dedication it took. A limited crew of four completed the project during the COVID-19 pandemic. They finished on time and within budget. That demonstrates their expertise.

The stainless-steel frame was carefully crafted. It was mounted over a structural concrete base. Four inches of infilled concrete were placed into the frame. The stainless steel had to be delicately hand ground. This defines the Bomanite Revealed infill.
