Could it be that the very walls we stand before hold echoes of both healing hands and a city’s tumultuous past? Right here, in the elegant Wilanów district, stands the dawny szpital św. Aleksandra. A building whose story intertwines with the Potocki family, renowned architects, and the ever-changing landscape of Warsaw. The dawny szpital św. Aleksandra emerged not from grand ambition but from a heartfelt need. August Potocki, driven by the desire to honor his father Aleksander, envisioned a haven for the ailing residents of Wilanów. The year was 1845. An existing infirmary, though expanded, struggled to meet the growing needs of the community. This act of remembrance, however, blossomed into something far grander. Tasked with bringing this vision to life was Henryk Marconi. A celebrated architect of his time, Marconi transformed a former guesthouse into a beacon of hope. He moved the front facade, creating a stately entrance. A central projection and side alcoves added architectural flourish. Above the portico, the Potocki family crest stood proudly. Inside, the building was meticulously designed to serve its purpose. A chapel graced the first floor. It even housed a school for children in the 1850s. Sadly, the hospital’s existence was cut short after the January Uprising. It fell victim to the reprisals that followed, a poignant reminder of the turbulent times Poland often faced. Over the years, the dawny szpital św. Aleksandra witnessed a revolving door of purposes. It served as a shelter, a school of tailoring, and even housed the National Museum’s collection after World War II. Yet, the echoes of its original purpose lingered. In 1995, the building was returned to the Branicki family, then subsequently sold. Years later, between 2003 and 2008, the dawny szpital św. Aleksandra and the accompanying doctor’s house underwent extensive renovations. This restoration unveiled a hidden treasure: a bottle containing the original act of construction from 1846. A tangible link to its noble beginnings. Today, the dawny szpital św. Aleksandra stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of compassion and architectural brilliance. While no longer a place of healing in the traditional sense, its walls whisper stories of those who sought solace, the hands that offered it, and the family that made it all possible. Though we can only admire it from a distance, let us remember the significance of the dawny szpital św. Aleksandra. It stands as a reminder that even in the face of adversity, hope and humanity can prevail.
