“Ever heard of a newspaper with more reporters per reader than any other in the world?” We’re standing before Haaretz the iconic Israeli newspaper. Its history is as fascinating as the city itself.

Founded in 1918 in British Palestine Haaretz started as Hadashot Haaretz meaning News of the Land. It wasn’t always in Tel Aviv. Initially based in Jerusalem it later relocated to Tel Aviv in 1923. This move was partly thanks to financial support from the Tel Aviv municipality. They paid for future advertisements.

The newspaper’s early years saw it navigate complex political landscapes. Its liberal viewpoint associated it with the General Zionist A faction. This faction later became the Progressive Party. Haaretz maintained its independence though. They steered clear of any strict party line.

Gershom Schocken a significant figure took over Haaretz in 1939. He held the editor-in-chief position for an incredible 51 years. Schocken’s leadership fostered a culture of absolute freedom of expression. Haaretz became known for its high-quality writing and insightful commentary.

Haaretz’s influence grew. The English edition launched in 1997 reaching international audiences. It continues to be widely read by international observers. It’s discussed frequently in the international press. Haaretz remains influential. It is considered one of the most respected newspapers globally.

Today Haaretz maintains its commitment to journalistic excellence. Its reporters continue to provide top-notch news coverage and insightful commentary. Despite facing challenges including boycotts and criticism it remains a vital voice in Israel. Its legacy stretches back to the early days of the state. It’s woven into the fabric of Tel Aviv itself. Haaretz stands as a testament to the power of journalism. It continues to shape public discourse and opinion. It offers a unique perspective on Israel’s history and its present.
