“Never fall or fail.” Ever heard that phrase? It’s more than just words here at Mishima Jinja Shrine. It is a guiding principle.

Welcome to Mishima Jinja Shrine in Tokyo’s Taito district. This Shinto shrine has a captivating history. It is intertwined with legends of thunder and divine intervention.

Mishima Jinja Shrine’s story begins in 1281. Kōno Michiari prayed to Ōyamatsumi-no-mikoto. This is the family’s patron deity. He sought victory in battle. A white falcon guided him to triumph. In a dream, he was told to enshrine the deity. He did this at his home in Musashi. This marked the start of Mishima Jinja Shrine.

In 1650, the shogunate ordered the shrine’s relocation. It moved to Kinzan village. Later in 1710, it moved again. The land was needed for the shogunate’s use. The villagers missed their deity. So, a branch was established in Kinzan town. This ensured the deity remained accessible. The Kōno family descendants have served as priests. They have maintained the shrine’s traditions.

Now, let’s talk about the legend. This is the heart of Mishima Jinja Shrine’s fame. Long ago, lightning frequently struck this area. Villagers lived in fear. One day, lightning fell on the shrine grounds. The Shinto priest seized the opportunity. He trapped the thunder in a well. The thunder pleaded to be released. The priest agreed on one condition. It must promise never to strike this area again. The thunder agreed. Since then, lightning has never struck here.

This tale gave rise to Mishima Jinja Shrine’s special blessings. People come seeking protection from failure. They pray for success in exams and business. They also seek good fortune. The shrine offers amulets for this purpose. The “Ochinai-Mamori” protects against misfortune.

Inside the grounds, you will find the Fire Protection Inari Shrine. This is the local deity. It offers protection and prosperity. There is also the Thunder Well. This reminds us of the legend. A stone monument honors Ōzaki Aizō. He was the mayor of Tokyo.

Note the several water level marks. These were installed by the Home Ministry in the early Meiji period. There is also a sapling of the Miharu Takizakura cherry tree from Fukushima Prefecture.

Currently, Mishima Jinja Shrine is undergoing renovations. The main building is being rebuilt. Part of the site has a fixed-term lease until 2099. Mitsui Fudosan Residential is developing a condominium. This incorporates the shrine’s old tiles and lanterns into the design. The entire project should be completed around August 2026.

Mishima Jinja Shrine is more than a historical site. It is a living testament to faith. It is a beacon of hope. It reminds us that even in the face of adversity. We can find the strength to never fall. Take a moment to appreciate the blend of legend and perseverance. Feel the spirit of Mishima Jinja. A place where wishes take flight and never fall to earth.
