The Khalsa Diwan Society in Vancouver is a story of resilience and community. It was founded in 1906, and it was registered officially in 1909. The first Sikh Gurdwara in North America was built in 1908 at 1866 West 2nd Avenue in Vancouver. The Khalsa Diwan Society provided a place for South Asians to come together and build a community. It was a place where they could share concerns, strategize on how to overcome racism and offer support to new arrivals. They provided food and housing to new immigrants, a refuge from hardship. The Gurdwara was a shared space for Sikhs, Hindus and Muslims. It was a symbol of hope. In 1970, it moved to its current location on Ross Street, after the 2nd Avenue property was sold. Today the Khalsa Diwan Society in Vancouver remains a central gathering place for the Sikh community, a testament to the enduring strength of faith and fellowship.
