Ösbysjön may seem like just a picturesque lake today, a perfect spot for a swim or a relaxing stroll. But its story goes much deeper, reaching back to the very roots of Djursholm. Ösbysjön isn’t just a lake; it’s a living testament to the area’s history. In the late 19th century, this area wasn’t a manicured park but a wild, natural expanse of pine forest. Imagine Djursholm’s founders declaring this area “Stadsparken” – a city park, a preserved piece of nature amidst the burgeoning villa town. The pines surrounding Ösbysjön today are ancient, some even a couple of centuries old, silent witnesses to Djursholm’s transformation. Ösbysjön itself has two designated swimming areas, each with its own parking, making it a popular summer destination. You can even walk around the entire lake, and if you’re feeling adventurous, a riding trail beckons atop the nearby hill. There’s even a sauna you can book in the service building on the southern side. But perhaps the most intriguing aspect of Ösbysjön lies not in the lake itself, but in its name. Ösbysjön takes its name from the ancient settlement of Ösby, originally located just south of the lake where the Djursholm riding arena and horse pastures now stand. This settlement dates back to the Iron Age, and its remnants, around forty covered stone settings, can still be found stretching from the riding grounds across the properties on the other side of Dahlbergsvägen.
