Imagine standing before a curtain of water. That is Vera’s Grotto.
Vera’s Grotto is more than just a picturesque waterfall. It’s an experience. It is best to visit Vera’s Grotto together with Witches Leap and Katoomba Falls.
To reach this hidden gem, you can walk Furber Steps. This path allows you to see these three waterfalls at once.
Vera’s Grotto is roughly a one hour and 45-minute drive from Sydney. It’s also just 15 minutes from Wentworth Falls. You’ll travel west on the M4, which becomes A32, until you reach Katoomba.
Turn left onto Parke Street. Follow it to the intersection with Waratah Street. Turn left onto Waratah Street. At the first roundabout, turn right onto Katoomba Street. After one kilometer, turn right onto Katoomba Falls Road, which becomes Cliff Road. In 600 meters, you’ll find a car park.
From the Katoomba Falls Kiosk, take the Prince Henry Cliff Walk. Turn left immediately past the track entrance. Then, turn right and walk down the stairs. You will reach the bottom of Witches Leap Waterfall in about 10 minutes. From there, walk down the stairs, keeping to the right, until you reach the bottom of Vera’s Grotto.
I highly recommend a side trip to the Middle Katoomba Falls Lookout. This is known as the Underfalls Walk.
Vera’s Grotto might have little to no water during the dry season. The ideal time to visit is late autumn, winter, or early spring. The Witches Leap Creek drops in a single column on the upper tiers, before fanning out on the lower rock platform near the bottom.
The bottom of Vera Falls is the most photogenic. Ferns and semi-rainforest foliage surround the base of the falls.
You can return via the same route. It takes about 20 to 25 minutes to reach the waterfall. The way back takes around 25 to 35 minutes. Alternatively, continue down the stairs to visit the Lower Katoomba Falls Lookout.
Remember Vera Falls is not to be confused with Vera’s Grotto Falls. This waterfall is best viewed after some decent rain. Though permanent, it’s a lot less impressive when the water flow is low. You can also reach them from the bottom by taking the Scenic Railway.
