Gazing upon the Margaretenbrunnen, one might hear whispers of gratitude echoing from Vienna’s past. This fountain, a gift from a bygone era, stands as a testament to the thirst of a community and the generosity of an emperor. The Margaretenbrunnen, inaugurated on November 24, 1836, was more than just a decorative element. It was a lifeline for the residents of Margareten. Emperor Franz I granted them access to the Hofwasserleitung, the imperial water pipeline. This pipeline, originally built in 1552 by Emperor Ferdinand I, brought fresh water from seven springs to the imperial court and other important locations. Before the Margaretenbrunnen, the community lacked a reliable source of clean drinking water. The fountain, adorned with a lead sculpture of Saint Margaret vanquishing a dragon by Johann Nepomuk Schaller, became a symbol of hope and relief. It quenched the thirst of the community until 1843 when the Kaiser-Ferdinands-Wasserleitung was completed. Even then, the Margaretenbrunnen remained a cherished landmark. In 1886, during renovations of Margaretenplatz, the fountain was carefully moved 20 meters to its current location. It received a new pedestal, designed by Alois Hauser, while the sculpture was restored by Wilhelm Sturm. So, as you stand before the Margaretenbrunnen, take a moment to appreciate its significance. It is not merely a fountain, but a symbol of the community’s struggle and ultimate triumph over adversity. It serves as a reminder of a time when access to clean water was a hard-won privilege, celebrated with a beautiful monument.
