The Low-Poly Open Heart Sculpture began with artist M.L. Duffy. He missed his wife. She was in Japan for work. He channeled his feelings into this unique piece. Duffy teaches art at Gonzaga College High School in Washington, D.C.

The sculpture’s journey from conception to reality is quite interesting. Duffy used a 3D modeling program. One of his students introduced it to him. Algorithms helped him create the heart’s model. He calls it a great example of teachers learning from students.

Initially, Duffy tried building the heart with wood. But it kept collapsing. Recycled corrugated plastic came to the rescue. A parent of one of his students provided it. This durable material finally brought his vision to life.

Creating the Low-Poly Open Heart Sculpture took about 40 hours. Half that time was spent assembling it. Duffy likened it to a jigsaw puzzle. A puzzle with no picture on the box. After assembly, the heart is welded. Then it receives a coat of tractor paint. This makes it able to withstand all weather conditions. The industrial materials contrast the heart’s soft sentiment.

Duffy has been honing his craft for 17 years. He studied architecture at the University of Maryland. Then he discovered steel sculpture and fell in love. He earned his bachelor’s degree in studio art there. Later, he got his MSA from Goldsmiths, University of London.
