Envision this majestic structure. The Theseus Temple stands before you a neoclassical marvel in Vienna’s Volksgarten.

This isn’t just any temple. It’s a story of art and architecture intertwining. Built between 1819 and 1823 by Peter von Nobile the Theseus Temple mimics the Temple of Hephaestus in Athens. Nobile also designed the impressive Äussere Burgtor gates nearby.

Originally it housed Antonio Canova’s Theseus and the Centaur sculpture. Now you’ll find contemporary art exhibitions here. Each year a single artwork is displayed usually from late spring to early autumn.

The name Theseus Temple is a little misleading. The Athenian original also bore the name Theseion. People believed Theseus’s bones were buried there. The Viennese temple’s name connects it to Canova’s famous sculpture.

Imagine the 2022 exhibition Bottled Ocean 2122. George Nuku’s incredible underwater scene created from plastic waste. Ocean deities covered the walls. Bottle tops and sea anemones made from plastic bottle rings adorned the walls. Swarms of ocean life hung from the ceiling. A coral reef shimmered on the floor. A Polynesian chant echoed through the space.

The Theseus Temple is more than a building. It’s a living testament to history. It’s a bridge between ancient Greece and modern art. It’s a space for reflection a place of beauty.
