In 1920 a unique school emerged in Bromma, the Äppelvikens privata elementarskola. This was the beginning of what we now know as Smedslättsskolan. The school initially catered to children from the Äppelviken and Smedslätten areas. It started in a humble way. Teachers would visit the homes of their pupils, providing lessons in makeshift classrooms. Imagine that, receiving an education right in your own living room. The need for a dedicated space grew. In 1923 a small villa on Drömstigen 32, where Smedslättsskolan stands today, was transformed into a schoolhouse. It housed five classrooms and a teacher’s room, accommodating 25 students in the equivalent of today’s third and fourth grades. Over time, Smedslättsskolan experienced significant growth and transformation. It evolved from a small private institution to a renowned public school. In 1934 it earned the right to offer a full elementary school education, specifically for girls. The first class of young women graduated in 1935. The school we see today is a blend of old and new, with the original 1923 structure incorporated into a larger building during an expansion in 1941. This seamless integration of architectural styles speaks to the school’s rich history and its ability to adapt to the changing times. Today, Smedslättsskolan continues to be a vibrant place of learning, now a co-educational institution serving students from first to sixth grade.
