A grand vision of Rococo elegance. That’s what Claes Grill, a prominent figure in the Swedish East India Company, envisioned for his summer retreat. He named it Svindersvik. Svindersvik stands as a testament to 18th-century opulence and architectural ingenuity. Built in the 1740s just outside Stockholm, Svindersvik isn’t a typical manor or castle. It’s one of Sweden’s oldest preserved summer residences. The renowned architect Carl Hårleman, also known for Svartsjö Palace, designed Svindersvik’s main building. Hårleman drew inspiration from French Rococo architecture, resulting in a symmetrical, two-story structure that appears as a single story from the outside. The entrance, reached by a double staircase, sits within a central avant-corps, adorned with rusticated lesenes and a pediment. A similar avant-corps graces the opposite side, facing the Baltic Sea. Inside, Svindersvik boasts a symmetrical layout. A grand hall, illuminated by a roof lantern, welcomes visitors. The dining room takes center stage. An antechamber, decorated with Chinese wallpapers reflecting Grill’s connections to the East India Company, lies to its left. To the right, a reconstructed parade bedroom showcases similar Chinese wallpapers and period furniture. Svindersvik’s charm extends beyond the main building. A separate kitchen wing retains its original 18th-century character. Down by the water’s edge stands the Pavilion, built in the 1750s and later expanded. Inside, a magnificent banquet hall with five-meter ceilings awaits. Admire the preserved wall decorations from the late 18th century, a stunning chandelier, and what is possibly Sweden’s tallest cocklestove. The Pavilion also houses guest rooms furnished with 18th- and 19th-century décor. The formal garden, with its symmetrical design and aged apple trees that still bear fruit, completes the Svindersvik experience. Svindersvik remained largely unaltered throughout the 19th and 20th centuries. This makes it a truly unique window into 18th-century Swedish life, a place where time seems to stand still. Even the terrace, a later addition, seamlessly blends with the original design, adding to Svindersvik’s timeless appeal.
