Amidst the vibrant tapestry of Hong Kong stands the Hong Kong and Macau Lutheran Hsin En Church. Its unassuming exterior belies a rich history. This church is a testament to faith resilience and the enduring power of the gospel.
The Hong Kong and Macau Lutheran Hsin En Church wasn’t always here. Its roots trace back to 1915 when Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod missionaries arrived in China. They initially worked in Hubei and Sichuan provinces spreading the gospel along the Changjiang River. The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod HK & Macau Mission was established during this period.
In 1949 these missionaries planned a return to the United States. However the sight of countless refugees in Hong Kong changed their plans. They remained starting evangelical work in Hong Kong. They later established the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod Hong Kong Mission. This mission became a cornerstone of support for many refugees. It provided much needed shelter and spiritual guidance.
The missionaries initially used makeshift shelters for worship. They also established a Bible school to train local leaders. This demonstrates a commitment to building a lasting Christian presence. They rented a space in Kowloon forming the first synodical congregation. Services were conducted in both Mandarin and Cantonese. They spread the gospel through street evangelism hospital visits and Bible classes. The church grew rapidly establishing more congregations.
In 1953 the first synodical school opened. The Synod subsequently founded many primary secondary schools and kindergartens. These schools not only educated children but also served as centers for evangelical activities. Many churches and mission stations held meetings within these school buildings.
The Synod continually served the public especially aiding refugees in the 1950s. In 1977 Lutheran Social Service was founded. The church transitioned from a mission station to an independent local church. It registered as the Lutheran Church-Hong Kong Synod becoming a partner church of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod in the United States.
The Hong Kong and Macau Lutheran Hsin En Church embodies this legacy. It stands as a symbol of faith perseverance and service to the community. Its history is interwoven with the stories of refugees missionaries and generations of believers. It continues to share God’s love and grace in the heart of Hong Kong.
