Can a street speak? In Toronto’s Islington Village, the walls do the talking. Welcome To Islington: Toronto’s Village of Murals isn’t just a collection of paintings. It’s a vibrant conversation about the past, whispering stories onto Dundas Street West. Welcome To Islington: Toronto’s Village of Murals stretches across five blocks, boasting 26 murals and over 25,000 square feet of art. The Islington Business Improvement Area (BIA) launched this project in 2004. Their aim was twofold: to beautify the area and prevent graffiti. They’ve certainly succeeded, transforming ordinary walls into captivating windows to the past. The murals depict scenes from Islington’s rich history. One shows the Islington Golf Club in the 1920s, complete with a ball collector in a protective cage. Another captures the bustling street scene of 1912, showcasing the old Islington Hotel and Clayton’s Butcher shop. Welcome To Islington: Toronto’s Village of Murals also celebrates local businesses like Gordon’s Dairy, whose milk wagons were a familiar sight in the mid-20th century. The murals even feature cultural icons like Glenn Gould, who studied at the Royal Conservatory of Music’s Islington branch. One particularly charming mural depicts a bygone era of leisure. Children in old-fashioned bathing suits frolic in the mill pond, climbing on the waterwheel. Another shows a more tranquil scene: a father and his children fishing in Mimico Creek, a timeless image of family life. John Kuna and Sarah Collard are the primary artists behind Welcome To Islington: Toronto’s Village of Murals. Each mural represents 300 to 400 hours of painstaking work. Their artistry has brought Islington’s history to life, preserving the charm of a village that’s now part of a bustling city. Welcome To Islington: Toronto’s Village of Murals offers a captivating journey through time. Take a stroll along Dundas Street and let the walls tell their stories.
