Gwen Thompson Briar Patch Park. Have you heard about it? This park wasn’t always known by that name. It used to be simply Briar Patch Park. But its story is deeply entwined with a local hero.

Let’s journey back. Picture Sterling Park. Imagine a dedicated woman named Gwen Thompson. She had a dream. She wanted a safe outdoor space. It should provide fun for children and families.

Gwen wasn’t just dreaming. She was working tirelessly. She was a member of the Sterling Jaycees since 1978. For 22 years, she poured her heart into Briar Patch Park. Funding it and maintaining it were her passions.

Locals fondly remember Gwen. They call her the park’s founder, creator, and caretaker. She was the lifeline of Briar Patch Park.

Gwen chaired a monthly yard sale. This sale partially funded the park. She was also known as the “sign lady.” Gwen and her husband built a sign. People could post birthday wishes and announcements. They only needed to make a small donation. All the money went to the park’s upkeep.

Gwen’s dedication stemmed from a deep love. She said, “It’s the love of the park. We wanted to keep the park up.” She wanted a playground and park for Sterling Park children. Her dream became a reality. It still benefits children of all ages today.

Sadly, Gwen Thompson passed away on June 17, 2011. She fought a courageous battle with cancer. But her legacy lives on.

Briar Patch Park has creative playground units. There is also a picnic pavilion with tables. You will find volleyball, tennis, and basketball courts here. Local residents gather with family and friends.

In September 2011, the Board of Supervisors made a unanimous decision. They renamed Briar Patch Park. It became Gwen Thompson Briar Patch Park. This honored Gwendolyn D. Thompson. It recognized her commitment to the park. She made the park a reality for the Sterling Community.

Today, Gwen Thompson Briar Patch Park spans five acres. It sits along Sterling Boulevard. The park offers many features. There is a basketball court and benches. A creek flows nearby. Free parking is available. There is also a gazebo and pickleball courts. You can find picnic tables and a playground here. Restrooms are accessible. Tennis and volleyball courts are ready for play.

The park even features a National Fitness Court. An ADA-accessible trail leads from the parking lot. It connects to the restrooms, pavilion, and tennis court. Dogs are welcome on leashes. But they are not allowed in athletic or spectator areas.

Remember Gwen Thompson as you enjoy the park. Her spirit of dedication made this space possible. The park provides recreation and community for all.
