Doesn’t it feel like you’re stepping back in time? You are standing before Akishima Tenjinsha. This shrine whispers tales of ancient scholars and serene plum blossoms.

Akishima Tenjinsha is dedicated to Sugawara no Michizane. He is revered as the god of learning. This shrine has been a beacon of academic aspiration for generations.

Legend says that Akishima Tenjinsha’s story began in the late 16th century. During the Bunroku era from 1592 to 1596, the shrine’s spirit was invited from Taniho Tenmangu in Kokubunji.

Sugawara no Michizane loved plum blossoms. Because of this connection, plum trees grace the grounds of Akishima Tenjinsha. In spring these trees burst into vibrant color. They fill the air with sweet fragrance.

Michizane was a scholar and poet. He was unjustly exiled. He penned a famous poem about plum blossoms. It speaks of longing and remembrance.

“When the east wind blows send your fragrance to me over the fence plum blossoms. Do not forget spring even though your master is gone.” This poem is a testament to Michizane’s love for plum blossoms. It also shows his resilience in adversity.

Akishima Tenjinsha was once home to a giant kaya tree. It was designated as a natural monument. Sadly a typhoon felled it in 1939. Only its remains hint at its former grandeur.

Local children once made paper flags. They offered these flags to the shrine. It was part of the Tenjin Ko festival held every January 25th. This tradition fostered a sense of community.

Interestingly Akishima’s local beer uses plums from Akishima Tenjinsha. It combines them with local spring water. This creates a brew called “Akishima Tenjin Ume Hazuki”.

The grounds here are also said to be the site of the residence of Yoshii no himaro. He appears in the Nihon Ryoiki.

Take a moment to reflect on the enduring legacy of Akishima Tenjinsha. Consider the pursuit of knowledge and the beauty of plum blossoms. Let the spirit of Sugawara no Michizane inspire you on your journey.
