Did you know that Henry E Lackey High School has a rich history spanning decades? It’s a testament to the community’s commitment to education. Standing before Henry E Lackey High School you see a building that opened in 1969. It replaced an older structure built in 1953. That older building became General Smallwood Middle School. This wasn’t the school’s first location. The original Lackey School was in Indian Head Maryland. The school was first named simply the Lackey School. Later it became Lackey High School. In 2001 it was officially renamed Henry E Lackey High School. This honored Rear Admiral Henry E Lackey. He was instrumental in establishing one of the county’s first high schools in 1920.
Henry E Lackey High School is more than just a place for learning. It’s a hub of activity. The school boasts a wide range of Advanced Placement courses. These include English Language and Composition. Also offered are English Literature and Composition European History and Human Geography. Students can also take Psychology United States History and World History. Science is also well represented. Students can explore Calculus AB Statistics Biology Chemistry Environmental Science and Physics 1. Lackey also offers Spanish Language Art History Computer Science Principles and Precalculus. A unique addition to the curriculum is African American Studies.
Beyond academics Henry E Lackey High School shines in athletics. The school’s mascot is the Charger. The Chargers compete in the Southern Maryland Athletic Conference. They play against other public schools in Charles Calvert and St Mary’s Counties. Students participate in a wide variety of sports including soccer golf volleyball field hockey and cross country. Football cheerleading swimming wrestling and indoor and outdoor track are also available. Students also compete in basketball tennis and both boys and girls lacrosse. The school’s athletic teams have a proud history. The men’s soccer team boasts four regional titles. They also achieved a conference title which was a first for a Charles County team. The men’s and women’s basketball programs have also celebrated success. They have won several conference and regional championships. Lackey is also unique in Charles County for its indoor swimming pool. It’s one of only three schools in the county to have such a facility. The school’s track and field teams have a remarkable run for the last 4 years. They won 1st place in SMAC Regionals and State competitions. The tennis team recently added a regional championship to its accomplishments.
