Why is this peaceful green space named after a woman who never lived here? Welcome to Tora Dahls Park. This park, tucked away in the Fredhäll district of Stockholm, offers a tranquil escape from the city bustle. It’s named after the famous Swedish author, Tora Dahl, though she never actually lived here. The park’s history is deeply intertwined with the area’s past. Before Tora Dahls Park charmed residents with its greenery, this space was part of Fredhäll’s Estate. The estate, built in 1819, was home to Olof Tideström, a prominent auctioneer. Imagine a grand, two-story wooden house with a striking Mansard roof dominating the landscape. This was Fredhäll’s main building, surrounded by its auxiliary structures. The estate was demolished in 1936 to make way for residential buildings, leaving this part of the land untouched. For decades, it remained nameless, holding onto the memories of Fredhäll’s past, marked by a few old trees that stood as silent witnesses to the changing times. In 2017, a local newspaper held a competition to finally give this forgotten corner a proper name. One suggestion stood out: Tora Dahls Park. The city embraced this idea, honoring Dahl’s legacy as a celebrated Swedish author. So, in 2018, amidst much fanfare, the park was christened Tora Dahls Park. Although she may not have walked these paths, her spirit of resilience and her dedication to her craft now grace this serene space in the heart of Stockholm.
