Gazing at the impressive Rheinbrücke Leverkusen, have you ever considered its crucial role in Cologne’s history? The Rheinbrücke Leverkusen, often called Leverkusen Bridge, isn’t entirely in Cologne. It connects Cologne-Merkenich on the left bank with Leverkusen-Wiesdorf on the right. The city boundary actually runs down the middle of the Rhine. This bridge is considered the northernmost Rhine bridge in Cologne. Its construction arose from the booming traffic of the early 1960s. Connecting the A1 autobahn to Cologne’s ring road became essential, closing the gap between the Leverkusen intersection and Cologne-West. After four years of construction, from 1961 to 1965, the Rheinbrücke Leverkusen opened on July 5, 1965. This completed Cologne’s ring road. This bridge is more than just a roadway. It is a steel cable-stayed bridge, stretching over 687 meters long and 37.80 meters wide. Six autobahn lanes dominate its surface, but pedestrian and bicycle paths also flank the sides. The bridge’s central structure is a two-part hollow box, suspended by eight steel cables. By 2005, over 116,000 vehicles crossed the Rheinbrücke Leverkusen daily. This makes it one of Germany’s most heavily trafficked bridges. The constant flow of vehicles underscores its importance to Cologne and beyond.
