Remember the roar of the crowd? That’s the spirit of Avalon Wolves Rugby right here. This isn’t just a club it’s a community. Avalon Wolves Rugby welcomes players and supporters from all over the region. You will find members from Stokes Valley, Upper Hutt, Wellington City, and surrounding suburbs.
Founded on November 28, 1979, Avalon Wolves Rugby came about through the amalgamation of Naenae Old Boys and Taita RFCs. They share a proud history and many memorable moments at Fraser Park. In those early days, the club colours became a blend. They adopted Cambridge blue, black, and gold from Naenae. They also took maroon and white from Taita.
The Avalon Rugby Football Club wants to create a supportive and winning environment. They want players, family, and friends to feel proud. They aim to develop players, coaches, and administrators so they can reach their potential. The club strives to keep talent within the Avalon catchment area. They create awareness that Avalon is a club for everyone. This includes players, coaches, administrators, and supporters.
Avalon tasted early success. In 1981, they defeated Titahi Bay 16-0 to claim the Hardham Cup. They secured the Hardham Cup again in 1984 and 1988. The Swindale Shield wins followed in 1991 and 2001. They were back-to-back semi-finalists in 2003 and 2004. In 2010, Avalon made the Hardham Cup final.
In late 2014, the club adopted the Wolf as its emblem. They became known as Avalon Wolves RFC. The wolf symbolizes core values. These include loyalty, leadership, strength, family, and teamwork. All Avalon members are part of the “WOLFPACK”. In 2015, Avalon returned to Premier Rugby.
Many players have achieved representative honors. Some have become All Blacks, Maori All Blacks, Samoan, and Niuean representatives. Kat Whata-Simpkins took to the world stage wearing the 7s Black Ferns Jersey. Asafo Aumua made try-scoring history with the Wellington Lions. He also represented New Zealand in the U20s squad. Scott Waldrom served as assistant coach of the All Black 7s.
Avalon has strong ties to the community. They host the Avalon Cup. This is a traditional college clash between Naenae and Taita. Various community groups use the Avalon Clubrooms. These include Ignite Sport, Body by Paris, and Hutt City Lifestyle Centre.
The Avalon Wolves are a founding member of Sportsville. This is a multi-million dollar development at Fraser Park. The club has moved to new facilities next to its number one field. That field is an all-weather astroturf. Avalon’s Premier side played its first match in March 1980. The result was a 0-7 defeat to Poneke. But since then many stories have been told.
