Is that a church or a lighthouse? You might ask yourself that when you see the St. Franziskus Church here in Zürich-Wollishofen. Its unique round tower, reminiscent of those found on Italian coasts, is a tribute to the church’s namesake, Saint Francis of Assisi. The church itself, built between 1927 and 1928, boasts a vibrant red hue that was actually recommended by the city authorities as part of their vision for a more colorful Zürich. The St. Franziskus is designed in a neo-Romanesque basilica style, a common feature in architect Josef Steiner’s work. While the exterior remained largely untouched throughout the years, the interior of St. Franziskus has undergone numerous transformations. In 1931, artist Fritz Kunz adorned the church with beautiful frescoes, depicting scenes from the life of St. Francis. However, during a major renovation in 1973, the church underwent a drastic redesign. The altar’s position was shifted, and a new set of stained-glass windows by artist Max Rüedi, illustrating St. Francis’s “Canticle of the Sun,” became the new focal point. Fast forward to 2004, and another renovation saw St. Franziskus restored closer to its original design. The church we see today reflects this blend of historical changes, a testament to evolving architectural trends and liturgical practices.
