Imagine weary travelers in 1789. They sought respite on their long journey to Shenzhen. Right here stands Cheung Shan Monastery. It was once a haven for them.

Cheung Shan Monastery. It was formerly known as Cheung Sang Nunnery. It stands in Miu Keng of Wo Keng Shan. It is in Ping Che of Fanling. This monastery offers a glimpse into Hong Kong’s past. It is more than just a religious site.

Miu Keng was the halfway point to Shenzhen. The route went via Sha Tau Kok. The monastery became a vital rest stop. Weary travelers found free tea and a place to rest. They could rejuvenate before continuing their journey.

Look at the architecture of Cheung Shan Monastery. It is a two-hall structure. The rear hall is slightly higher. It rises about one meter above the front hall. Admire the exquisite plaster moldings. They adorn both the exterior and interior.

Inside Cheung Shan Monastery, discover sacred figures. Buddha is worshipped here. So is Kwun Yum. She is the Goddess of Mercy. Also revered is Tei Chong Wong. He is the Guardian of the Earth. These deities reflect the spiritual heart of the monastery.

Time passed and the monastery faced challenges. The Sha Tau Kok railway and highway opened. Fewer travelers needed the rest stop. After the Abbot nun passed away in 1994, the monastery was abandoned. It was during the Japanese occupation.

But the story of Cheung Shan Monastery does not end there. In 1949, a monk arrived. He revived the monastery. It regained its purpose as a place of worship.

In 1997, Cheung Shan Monastery underwent a full restoration. This was under the Antiquities and Monuments Office’s supervision. The Architectural Services Department also helped. In 1998, Cheung Shan Monastery was declared a monument. It is a testament to its historical and cultural value.

Consider the journey to Cheung Shan Monastery today. You can take a green minibus. The 56K from Fanling Station will get you close. Get off at Wo Keng Shan Road and walk for 15 minutes. Alternatively, take the 78K bus from Sheung Shui. Get off at Chun Yiu stop. Then walk to the monastery.
