“Washington’s Prettiest Suburb.” That’s what they called Tuxedo, Maryland back in 1894. Today, we’re standing in what remains of this once-promising railroad suburb.

Tuxedo’s story begins with the Baltimore and Potomac Railroad. By 1886, settlements were scattered along the rail line. A local developer saw an opportunity. He envisioned Tuxedo as a suburban oasis for Washington D.C. residents. It even had its own train station.

Sales were aggressive, but development was slow. By 1917, only about 20 houses stood here. There was also a church and a school. Still, Tuxedo persisted. By 1942, the community had grown. It now included about 50 residences and a new school, spanning five blocks.

Tuxedo is bordered by Cheverly to the north. The John Hanson Highway is on the south and east. The B and O Railroad line defines its western edge. Interestingly, Tuxedo’s census data is combined with Cheverly’s.

Tuxedo never incorporated. It shares services with Cheverly. The Cheverly-Tuxedo School opened in 1923. It served the community until 1991. It now functions as a specialty education center.

The Tuxedo-Cheverly Fire Station was another shared resource. The original station was built in 1930. A new one replaced it in 1968. It became the first fire station in Prince George’s County staffed 24/7 by career firefighters in 1995. Sadly, it closed in 2010 due to budget cuts. The building was sold to a private buyer.

Today, New Horizons Supported Services operates here. They focus on helping individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Much of the land around Tuxedo is now industrial. This is due to the railroad, the John Hanson Highway, and the Baltimore-Washington Parkway.

Tuxedo may not have become the grand suburb its founder envisioned. Yet it holds a unique place in Prince George’s County history.

Before we move on, it’s worth noting that Cathy Lanier, former Chief of the Metropolitan Police Department of D.C., grew up right here in Tuxedo. From a small railroad suburb to the head of the D.C. police force, it is a remarkable journey. Tuxedo has seen its share of change. From “Washington’s Prettiest Suburb” to an industrial area, the community has evolved. But its story remains a testament to the enduring spirit of those who called Tuxedo home.
