Have you ever heard of a church born from caves and forests? Right here stands the Moravian Church in South Africa – Herrnhut, a testament to a faith that refused to be extinguished. The story of this church begins far from Cape Town, in Bohemia, now the Czech Republic. In the 15th century, a group broke away from the Catholic Church, forming the Unitas Fratrum. They faced brutal persecution during the Thirty Years’ War, forced to worship in secret, becoming the “hidden seed.” Their faith found new life in 1722 at Herrnhut, Germany, on the estate of Count Zinzendorf. This renewed Moravian Church became a beacon of missionary zeal. In 1737, they sent Georg Schmidt to South Africa to work with the Khoi-Khoi people. He achieved remarkable success, but his work was met with resistance from the Dutch colonial government. Schmidt was expelled in 1744, leaving behind a small but devoted group of converts who kept the faith alive for fifty years. The Moravian Church in South Africa finally received official recognition in 1793, marking a new chapter in its history. The mission thrived, attracting people from various tribes. In 1828, inspired by a Xhosa woman named Wilhemina, the Moravians expanded their work to the Eastern Cape. The growing mission was divided into two provinces in 1868, a decision made for practical reasons, but one that would later create divisions along racial lines. The rise of apartheid in South Africa deeply affected the Moravian Church. Its two provinces, largely separated by race, stood in stark contrast to the church’s heritage of unity. Starting in 1969, a long process of reconciliation began. It culminated in 1991 with the decision to reunite as “one Moravian Church in South Africa.” The Moravian Church in South Africa – Herrnhut, therefore, represents not only a journey of faith across continents but also a journey toward unity and reconciliation.
