Wynberg’s history whispers from the very stones beneath your feet. This Southern Suburb of Cape Town boasts a rich past. It began as a farming area in the 1650s near Jan van Riebeeck’s Boscheuvel farm. He planted the Cape’s first vineyards there. Wynberg’s name originates from the farm De Oude Wijnbergh Old Wine Mountain granted to Herman Weeckens in 1683.
The strategic location between Table Bay and False Bay transformed Wynberg. It became a vital transport hub. Oxen teams could rest and graze. Farmers had a convenient alternative to Cape Town’s market. When the British arrived in 1795 Wynberg rapidly developed into a garrison town. Many troops settled. Alexander Tennant a notable settler built Sonnebloem a house that still stands.
Wynberg’s importance grew. Edmund Roberts described it as beautiful in 1833. He mentioned gentlemen’s seats and neat cottages. The renowned astronomer John Herschel lived there from 1834 to 1838. He studied the southern skies. He and his wife also did botanical work. Young Charles Darwin met Herschel in Wynberg in 1836 influencing Darwin’s future work.
Wynberg was innovative. South Africa’s first electric power plants were built here in 1893. It powered a local tram system and streetlights. The municipality of Wynberg merged into Cape Town in 1927 due to financial issues and complaints about neglected outlying areas.
Wynberg’s legacy extends beyond its history. Wynberg Boys’ High School established in 1841 is the second oldest school in South Africa. It shares the hillside with the former stately home of Prince Labia. Wynberg Girls’ High School and Springfield Convent School are also prominent institutions. Wynberg Park a popular spot for picnics and braais dates back to 1902. The Maynardville Open-Air Theatre annually hosts Shakespeare in the Park productions.
The Wynberg military base established in 1804 on Alexander Tennant’s farm has historical significance. A rock inscription records dates when the 59th Regiment was part of the Cape garrison. The Officers’ Mess is a Provincial Heritage Site. Wynberg’s unique blend of history architecture and modern amenities continues to captivate.
