The current filtration plant, with its design echoing the historic C&O Canal, treats an astounding amount of water. Think up to 400 million gallons daily, drawn from the mighty Potomac. The plant has undergone multiple expansions. It began with a 30-million-gallon capacity in 1961. It was then enlarged to 90 million gallons in 1966. A further expansion in 1971 brought it to 240 million gallons per day. A bridge gracefully spans the canal, granting access for vehicles to service the intake and pumps. This pumps send the river water up to the treatment building on the riverside.
A vital part of this plant is its chemical treatment process. Chemicals like potassium permanganate, sulfuric acid, and others are crucial for purification. They are housed in separate buildings across the plant. The dry potassium permanganate system feeds six raw water intakes, each a massive 72 inches in diameter. The liquid chemicals are fed into both raw and finished water pipelines, made of prestressed concrete. These pipelines, dating back to the 1950s, range from 60 to 84 inches in diameter. They lie at the heart of the facility, requiring a complex system for chemical delivery. This intricate design navigates the limited space and multiple utilities surrounding the pipelines.
