“Let us succeed.” That’s the powerful meaning behind the name Masiphumelele. This township south of Cape Town embodies that spirit. Masiphumelele stands as a testament to the resilience of its people.

Initially known as Site 5, Masiphumelele’s story began in the 1980s. About 400 people settled here. Apartheid laws forced them to Khayelitsha. It was over 30 kilometers away. These families worked in Fish Hoek. The distance made life difficult. They kept trying to return.

As apartheid crumbled in the early 1990s, they moved back. Joined by others from the Eastern Cape, they established Masiphumelele. The Xhosa name reflected their hopes. About 8000 residents built shacks. They created their own community.

Life in Masiphumelele was tough. There was no school or clinic until 1995. Amenities were scarce. The community faced overcrowding. Basic services were lacking. Despite these hardships, Masiphumelele grew. By 2005, over 26,000 people lived here. Many built brick homes. In 2010, the population reached an estimated 38,000.

Masiphumelele has faced challenges. Protests erupted over service delivery. Anger flared over corruption. In 2008, xenophobic violence swept through South Africa. Foreigners were displaced from Masiphumelele. Residents later apologized and asked them to return. In 2011, a devastating fire burned down homes. It left thousands displaced.

Today, Masiphumelele is part of Ward 69 of Cape Town. It’s no longer an informal township. Most residents live in shacks. These are often built on privately owned land. Others are located in the wetlands. Conditions can be difficult. Families often live in one or two rooms.

Despite the difficulties, the spirit of Masiphumelele remains strong. The name reflects the community’s determination. Many organizations are working to improve life here. Masiphumelele demonstrates the power of hope.
