Is it possible for a college to shape a nation? The story of the Bible Institute of South Africa shows that it is possible. Founded in 1923, the Bible Institute of South Africa stands as a testament to unwavering faith. It is located along the False Bay coastline in Kalk Bay. The Bible Institute of South Africa has been training men and women for a century.
In the early 20th century theological education in South Africa was limited. It was mainly available within universities. Three church leaders grew concerned about the commitment to biblical teaching. These leaders were Rev Marsh, Rev Douglas, and Rev Dr J. R. L. Kingon FRSE. They wanted to establish a theological professorship at a South African university. Their aim was to provide high-quality academic training. This training would equip individuals to meet the challenges of a post-war world.
Unfortunately prevailing liberal theological influences frustrated their wish. Undeterred, they resolved to establish a college. At this college the evangelical doctrines of the Bible would be taught. So in 1923, they founded the Bible Institute of South Africa. The first classes were held in Mowbray in Cape Town. Just before World War II the Institute relocated to Kalk Bay. It has since grown into the present campus.
The Bible Institute of South Africa is a non-denominational Bible training college. Its staff and students come from various church affiliations. This creates a diverse and enriching learning environment. The teaching method is Christocentric. It employs a historic Protestant and Reformational hermeneutic. This approach ensures a deep and accurate understanding of the Bible.
The aim of the Bible Institute of South Africa is twofold. It seeks not only to impart knowledge. It also aims to develop skills and character. Students are equipped to be effective in life and service. The goal is to enable students to think rationally, clearly, and critically. They should address life issues biblically. This is within the context of serving others in diverse communities.
Since its founding, the Bible Institute of South Africa has trained over two thousand men and women. They have studied Hermeneutics, Biblical and Systematic Theology and the Doctrines of Scripture. They have also studied Old and New Testament Studies, Ontology, Christian Thinking, and Hebrew and Greek bible languages.
Today the Bible Institute of South Africa offers a range of courses. These include a Bachelor of Theology and a Bachelor of Theology Honours. The college also offers a Christian Foundations Gap-Year program. For off-campus students there is a correspondence-based Distance Learning Programme. BISA also runs a part-time Christian Leadership Programme.
The Bible Institute of South Africa celebrated its centenary in 2023. Its motto remains “To Know Christ and To Make Him Known”. This principle guides the institution’s mission. It shapes the lives of its students. It extends its impact across Africa and the world. The Bible Institute of South Africa stands as a beacon of faith.
