Beneath the modern facade of the DJK-Stadion lies a rich history. This isn’t just a sports ground. It’s a time capsule, echoing with the cheers and groans of generations past. The DJK-Stadion, originally known as the Stadion an der Frankfurter Straße, opened its gates in 1912. Imagine the roar of the crowd in 1925 as a grand wooden stand, seating 700, was unveiled. The DJK-Stadion witnessed the rise of FV 04 Würzburg. They climbed to the Bezirksliga Bayern, the top tier of German football at the time. A stunning 4-3 victory against the reigning German champions, 1. FC Nürnberg, etched itself into the stadium’s lore. The DJK-Stadion continued to host top-flight matches in the Gauliga Bayern during the Nazi era. It even hosted a match in the 1934/35 German Championship finals. Fast forward to the post-war era, a smaller grandstand replaced the war-damaged original. The stadium saw a record crowd of 15,196 in the 1975/76 Bayernliga season for a clash between local rivals FV 04 and Kickers. The DJK-Stadion again hosted second-division football between 1976 and 1980. Twice it was filled to capacity. The first time against VfB Stuttgart, the eventual champions, and the second time against 1. FC Nürnberg. Financial troubles forced FV 04 Würzburg into bankruptcy in 1981. The DJK acquired the stadium in 1982. The old grandstands were demolished. A new era began, marked by the construction of the current facilities, including the covered grandstand and a capacity of 3,000. The DJK-Stadion may look different today. But the echoes of its past still resonate.
