Consider this: a place of peace. It stands in stark contrast to the lively street that shares its name. Welcome to the Cemitério da Consolação. It is São Paulo’s oldest operating necropolis.

Founded on July 10 1858, Cemitério da Consolação emerged from a pressing need. Before its creation, São Paulo’s deceased were interred within church grounds. This practice raised significant public health concerns. The proximity to the dead was deemed unsanitary. A public cemetery became essential to address these issues.

Joaquim Antonio Alves Alvim proposed a public cemetery in 1829. His proposal sparked intense debate. It lasted three decades. Initial plans suggested locating it next to the Consolação church. Later proposals suggested the Luz neighborhood. Another proposed the Campos Elísios area. Engineer Carlos Rath ultimately chose Consolação in 1855. He considered altitude, wind direction, soil quality and distance from the city.

The Cemitério da Consolação officially opened on August 15 1858. This happened amidst a smallpox outbreak. The president of the province forbade burials in churches. The Cemitério da Consolação became the final resting place for the epidemic’s victims.

Over time, Cemitério da Consolação expanded. It incorporated parts of neighboring properties in 1884 and 1890. Until 1893, it was São Paulo’s only cemetery. The Cemitério do Brás opened that year. The Cemitério do Araçá followed in 1897.

As other cemeteries emerged, Cemitério da Consolação became more exclusive. It catered to the middle and upper classes. Wealthy families erected elaborate mausoleums. These became symbols of status. Artists were commissioned. They created tombs using marble and bronze.

Today, Cemitério da Consolação resembles an open-air museum. It houses the tombs of notable figures and families. The colossal mausoleum of the Matarazzo family stands out. It is the largest in Latin America. Italian sculptor Luigi Brizzolara created its bronze sculptures.

Visitors can take guided tours of Cemitério da Consolação. These tours explore the art and history. They tell the stories of those buried here. The tours are led by Francivaldo Gomes. He is known as Popó. He learned from historian Délio Freire dos Santos.

The cemetery faced challenges. Vandalism and theft were issues. Security has since been improved. Measures include 24-hour security. Enhanced lighting and cameras were installed.

The Cemitério da Consolação stands as a testament to São Paulo’s history. It reflects the city’s art and culture. It is a place of remembrance and reflection. It is a place where the stories of the past come to life.
