Could this austere building really house the dreams of thousands? The Gereon-Kaserne stands before us, not just a building, but a silent witness to nearly a century of history. Originally built in 1937 as the Mudra-Kaserne for a Wehrmacht pioneer battalion, the Gereon-Kaserne has seen its fair share of change.

Intriguingly, the Gereon-Kaserne was once named after General Bruno von Mudra who commanded a pioneer battalion in Cologne decades earlier. After the war, the abandoned Gereon-Kaserne provided what little shelter it could to displaced people. It then served as a base for the Belgian 5th Pioneer Battalion from 1951 to 1965, even being renamed Nieuwpoort-Kaserne during that time.

A small chapel, built in 1953 for the Belgian soldiers and local German families, still stands. Today, it serves a Russian Orthodox congregation – a reminder of the ever-changing tides of history. Finally, in 1974, the Gereon-Kaserne was renovated and became home to the German Armed Forces Personnel Office, witnessing the changing face of a reunified Germany. In 2022, it was renamed Gereon-Kaserne, after the patron saint of Cologne, St. Gereon. Today it houses the Assessment Center for Executives of the Bundeswehr, where the future leaders of the German army are selected and trained. The Gereon-Kaserne stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of this city, its history woven into the very fabric of its being.
