Nestled in the heart of Cape Town, DHL Newlands has witnessed over a century of sporting triumphs and heartbreaks. DHL Newlands isn’t just a stadium. It’s a living, breathing testament to the passion and dedication of rugby fans and the rich history of South African rugby. The Western Province Rugby and Football Union acquired the land for DHL Newlands back in 1888. Just imagine, in a country only 363 years old at one point in time, this stadium boasts a history of 125 years. The first official match at DHL Newlands took place on May 31, 1890. Stellenbosch claimed victory over Villagers before a crowd of 2,400 excited spectators. The stadium’s first test match followed in 1891, featuring the British Lions against South Africa, further solidifying DHL Newlands’ place in rugby history. The stadium underwent a transformation in 1919 with the construction of the first permanent concrete stands. Further developments continued throughout the decades. A new grandstand was built in 1950, followed by the addition of the south stand. Later additions included the Presidential Suite, elevators, Sponsors Suites, and function rooms, showcasing the stadium’s growth and adaptation to the evolving needs of the sport and its fans. DHL Newlands also played a pivotal role in the 1995 Rugby World Cup. It hosted the opening match between South Africa and Australia. The Springboks’ victory in that game marked the beginning of their historic World Cup triumph. Beyond rugby, DHL Newlands has embraced other events, including concerts and even served as the home ground for Ajax Cape Town FC. The stadium’s capacity now stands at 51,900.
