Thirty-eight meters under our feet a new chapter in Sāo Paulo’s transportation history is being written. This is the Construção Estação FAAP-Pacaembu. It will be a vital station on the Line 6-Orange. This line is currently under construction.
The FAAP-Pacaembu station will connect Vila Brasilândia to São Joaquim. Eventually, it will reach Rodovia dos Bandeirantes. It will extend to Cidade Líder. The station is located at Rua Ceará and Rua Sergipe. It will serve Pacaembu Stadium.
Originally, the station was planned for Avenida Angélica. Residents protested. They worried about increased foot traffic. They feared “gente diferenciada” or “different people.” This sparked a social media backlash. A protest called “Churrascão da Gente Diferenciada” supported the station. The location changed to Rua Sergipe and Rua Ceará.
Construction began in 2016. The initial opening was set for mid-2020. Delays occurred due to financing issues. The Federal Savings Bank delayed funding. This affected expropriations. The opening was then expected in 2021. Construction halted because of the Car Wash scandal. Construction companies lost funding.
The State Government sought international partners. Acciona from Spain and China Railway Construction Corporation were considered. Fernandes Arquitetos and ACCIONA visited the construction site. They descended 45 meters. The shaft’s diameter was 35 meters.
FAAP-Pacaembu station will have side platforms. The structure will feature exposed concrete. Support rooms will be at ground level. The station will be accessible to people with disabilities.
The station was renamed FAAP-Pacaembu in September 2021. The Line 6-Orange is expected to carry 630.000 passengers daily. Two tunnel-boring machines are excavating the tunnels. One heads north and the other south. The north “tatuzão” finished its work in February. The first section is planned to open in October 2026. It will run between Brasilândia and Perdizes. The most advanced stations are Perdizes, Santa Marina and Água Branca. The opening is now predicted for mid-2027.
