Devil’s Peak

Gazing up at Devil’s Peak, have you ever wondered about the secrets hidden within its rugged slopes? Devil’s Peak forms a dramatic backdrop to Cape Town. It stands proudly alongside Table Mountain and Lion’s Head, creating a natural amphitheater around the city. Devil’s Peak reaches a height of 1,000 meters, just shy of Table Mountain’s peak. Numerous hiking trails wind their way to its summit, offering breathtaking panoramic views. The mountain’s slopes hold historical echoes. Some of the Cape’s earliest farms were established along the Liesbeek River, nestled on the slopes of Devil’s Peak. These farms date back to the early days of the Cape settlement, founded in 1652 by Jan van Riebeeck for the Dutch East India Company. The peak’s imposing presence inspired a captivating legend. A tale is told of Jan van Hunks, a pipe smoker who lived at the foot of the mountain around 1700. His wife, weary of the constant smoke, banished him outdoors whenever he indulged. One day, while smoking on the slopes, Van Hunks encountered a mysterious stranger, also enjoying a pipe. They engaged in a smoking contest, each boasting of their prowess. The stranger revealed himself to be the devil, and the ensuing smoke filled the air, creating the iconic “tablecloth” cloud that often drapes Table Mountain. Van Hunks ultimately triumphed, but the devil’s presence forever marked the peak. Today, landmarks dot the slopes of Devil’s Peak. The Rhodes Memorial stands as a tribute to Cecil Rhodes, while the University of Cape Town sprawls across its eastern slopes. Mostert’s Mill, Groote Schuur Hospital, and the Groote Schuur estate, including presidential residences, also grace its slopes. Historic military blockhouses and cannons, remnants of past defenses, are scattered across the peak. Devil’s Peak isn’t just a scenic wonder. It’s a place where history, legend, and nature intertwine, offering a glimpse into the rich tapestry of Cape Town’s past and present.
