The Dome of Remembrance wasn’t always here. It started its life at the bottom of Adderley Street. Later it moved. It moved to make way for the city’s growing transport system. The relocation shows the city’s dedication. This dedication is to both progress and remembrance. It shows the balance between growth and the sacred space of remembrance.
Designed by Vernon March. The Dome of Remembrance is a masterpiece of sculpture. Two bronze soldiers stand guard. One fought in East Africa. The other fought on the Western Front. Above them a winged victory figure. It holds a laurel wreath and treads on a serpent. The serpent is wrapped around a globe. This symbolizes the triumph of peace over conflict.
The central column is eight meters tall. It is adorned with bronze wreathed swords. At its base are bronze plaques. They depict battle scenes. You can see trench scenes artillery and aircraft. There are even scenes of a hospital during wartime. The inscriptions are in English and Afrikaans. They honor all those who served.
On August 3rd 1924 the then Governor-General unveiled the Dome of Remembrance. He spoke of the memorial’s importance. He hoped it would serve as a potent advocate for peace. His words resonate today. They are a message of hope and unity.
