Once upon a time, Signal Hill got its very name from its historical use. Signal Hill is a famous peak in Cape Town. It stands 350 meters high. The peak is linked to Lion’s Head.
Long ago, signal flags flew here. These flags sent messages to ships in Table Bay. That’s how Signal Hill earned its name.
Today, Signal Hill is known for something else. It’s known for its noonday gun. This loud cannon fires every day. Well, almost every day. It doesn’t fire on Sundays and holidays. The gun fires at exactly noon. It’s a Cape Town tradition. This tradition dates back to 1806. The noonday gun found its home on Signal Hill in 1902.
Signal Hill offers amazing views. You can see a large part of Cape Town. You can also see Table Bay and the harbor.
But there is even more to Signal Hill. The neighborhood on its lower slopes has a name. It’s called Bo-Kaap. Bo-Kaap is associated with the Cape Malay people. It is also associated with their Muslim culture. The Malays built mosques here. They also built kramats. Kramats are tombs of Muslim saints. These tombs dot the slopes of Signal Hill.
Lion’s Head, near Signal Hill, wasn’t named for its felines. Dutch settlers named it Leeuwen Kop. That means Lion’s Head. They named Signal Hill Leeuwen Staart. That means Lion’s Tail. People thought the two peaks looked like a crouching lion.
Signal Hill played a key role in Cape Town’s defense. This was during the 18th and 19th centuries. Signal Hill sent visual messages. They used flags or cannon fire. This warned of approaching ships. The Noon Gun tradition dates back to 1806.
During the 1800s, Signal Hill had mining operations. People mined quartz and copper. These were small-scale operations. They extracted minerals for local use.
