Opened to the public on September 22 2017, Zeitz MOCAA is the largest museum dedicated to contemporary African art. It showcases art from the continent and its diaspora. The museum spans nine floors. It offers 9500 square meters of custom-designed space.
The building’s history is palpable. It was once the tallest building in South Africa. The silo’s original structure was built between 1921 and 1924. Indentured laborers constructed it. Heatherwick Studio conserved the industrial heritage. They excavated large open spaces. The 42 densely packed concrete cylinders were carefully carved. This created galleries and a central atrium. Strengthened glass caps the remaining concrete shafts. This allows natural light to flood the interior. The effect is cathedral-like.
The museum boasts 6000 square meters of exhibition space. There are eighty gallery spaces. Also included is a rooftop sculpture garden. You will find state-of-the-art storage and conservation areas. The development of Zeitz MOCAA cost R500 million. This was a partnership between the V&A Waterfront and Jochen Zeitz. It is a not-for-profit public cultural institution. The location is at the heart of one of Africa’s most visited hubs. The V&A Waterfront attracts up to 100000 people a day.
Zeitz MOCAA’s founders include Jochen Zeitz and the V&A Waterfront, led by David Green. Koyo Kouoh is the Executive Director and Chief Curator. Fawaz Mustapha is the Chief Operating Officer.
