“Tiger Gate” sounds fierce doesn’t it? That’s what “Toranomon” means. And we are standing in front of Toranomon Hills.
Toranomon Hills is more than just a collection of skyscrapers. It’s a symbol of Tokyo’s blend of modernity and tradition. This complex shows how the city reinvents itself while honoring its past.
The Toranomon Hills complex has four main buildings. There is the Station Tower. It stands 266 meters tall. There is also the Mori Tower at 255 meters. Not to forget the Residential Tower at 222 meters. And the Business Tower measures 185 meters.
Did you know that plans for this area began in 1946? The goal was to build a new road connecting Toranomon and Shimbashi. It was nicknamed “MacArthur Road” after General Douglas MacArthur. He was the Supreme Commander for the Allied Powers after World War II. The road’s proximity to the United States Embassy factored into that name.
However, the project stalled for decades. The government struggled to acquire the necessary land in central Tokyo. Finally, in 1989, a solution emerged. They would build a skyscraper above the road. Displaced residents would be relocated into the new building.
Before it was Toranomon Hills, the project had a long formal name. It was called Loop Line No. 2 Shimbashi/Toranomon Redevelopment Project Building III. In March 2013, Mori Building announced the official name: Toranomon Hills.
The Mori Tower was the first building completed in 2014. The Business Tower followed in 2020. The Residential Tower finished in 2022. The Station Tower, the final skyscraper, was completed in 2023.
The complex has a logo with four black bars forming an “M”. It resembles the “gate” kanji in Toranomon. There’s even a mascot. It is called Toranomon. Fujiko Pro, of Doraemon fame, developed it.
Toranomon Hills Station Tower opened on October 6, 2023. This 49-story tower includes an observation deck. It also has event spaces, shops, and restaurants. “TOKYO NODE” is a cutting-edge cultural hub within the tower. You can enjoy panoramic views of Tokyo from the rooftop pool. It is on the 49th floor. “T-MARKET” integrates design, art, and music around food.
The Toranomon area boasts excellent access. Major stations include Toranomon Station and Toranomon Hills Station. These are on the Tokyo Metro Ginza and Hibiya Lines. Onarimon Station is on the Toei Mita Line. Shimbashi Station is on the JR Yamanote Line.
Toranomon is home to many major corporations and financial institutions. The Toranomon Hills complex offers shops and acclaimed restaurants. There are also museums and conference halls.
The area has historical sites like Atago Shrine and Shiba Park. These provide soothing green spaces. You can also find the Minato Science Museum and the Weather Science Museum.
Toranomon Yokocho is on the third floor of the Business Tower. It evokes the retro feel of Showa-era alleyways. Izakayas and standing bars line the street. It is a great spot for a drink after work.
From high-end restaurants to casual eateries and cafes, Toranomon has diverse dining. Toranomon Sunaba is a historic soba restaurant established in 1872. It is a registered tangible cultural property.
