A crack of the bat echoes across the manicured turf. Welcome to Joe Cannon Stadium a true diamond in the rough.
Joe Cannon Stadium isn’t just a ballpark. It’s a testament to community spirit and the enduring love of baseball. Named after M Joseph Cannon the stadium’s namesake dedicated his life to youth sports in Laurel Maryland. He served as the first president of the Maryland City Little League. He organized countless tournaments. He even helped unify Anne Arundel County’s youth football leagues.
Opened in either September 1990 or April 1991 the stadium initially served amateur teams. Today it’s home to the Coppin State Eagles a Division I baseball team. It also hosts high school and other amateur league games. The Eagles play their games about 25 miles from their campus. That is because the university does not have its own on-campus baseball facilities.
The stadium boasts a capacity of 1500 spectators. Seating consists of metal bleachers some with backs some without. Many fans prefer to sit on chairs along the fence for a closer view of the action. The stadium recently underwent renovations. These upgrades included a new artificial turf field and improved player amenities.
One unusual feature is the large water tower visible beyond the left field wall. It’s a unique backdrop to the game unlike the Green Monster or Camden Yards Warehouse. Despite being nestled in a rapidly developing area near Arundel Mills Mall and Maryland Live Casino the stadium maintains a surprisingly peaceful atmosphere. Weekends are very busy due to traffic congestion however.
Though the stadium offers free parking and free admission for games there are no concessions stands during Coppin State games. This makes the atmosphere subdued. Nevertheless Joe Cannon Stadium remains a vital part of the community. It provides a place for families and friends to gather for a fun afternoon of baseball. Its story one of dedication and community spirit continues to be written one game at a time. The stadium is a reminder that even the smallest of ballparks can have a big impact.
