Why did a group of educators in Warsaw decide to establish a university in the early 1990s? Here, in front of Uczelnia Korczaka, that question hangs in the air. Uczelnia Korczaka, formerly known as Wyższa Szkoła Pedagogiczna, stands as a testament to their vision. It began in 1992 within the Towarzystwo Wiedzy Powszechnej (TWP), a Polish educational organization. Their goal was to create a non-public university accessible to individuals from less affluent rural and small-town communities. Professor Julian Auleytner spearheaded the initiative. Professor Lucjan Olszewski focused on the academic aspects. Professor Auleytner himself managed the economic side. They envisioned a university system spread across Poland, reflecting the TWP’s regional structure. The Ministry of Education, however, favored one larger institution over several smaller ones. On April 30, 1993, the Ministry granted permission to establish Uczelnia Korczaka. The university’s name honors Janusz Korczak, a renowned educator and children’s rights advocate. His values of equality in education and individual attention resonate within Uczelnia Korczaka’s mission. Today, Uczelnia Korczaka offers undergraduate and graduate programs in fields like psychology, pedagogy, social policy, social work, and management. The university also provides postgraduate studies, training, and workshops. It embraces modern learning methods like e-learning. This allows students flexibility in their studies. Uczelnia Korczaka maintains its own publishing house and libraries. It has expanded beyond Warsaw, with departments in Katowice, Olsztyn, Lublin, and Szczecin. This expansion reflects the initial vision of a geographically dispersed educational institution.
