The cool water beckoned. Kowloon Park Swimming Pool shimmered under the Hong Kong sun.

Kowloon Park Swimming Pool opened in 1989. It’s one of Hong Kong’s busiest pools. Over 2000 people swim there daily. This impressive complex boasts four indoor heated pools. There’s even an Olympic-sized 50-meter main pool. Two 25-meter training pools are also available. A dedicated 20-meter diving pool completes the indoor facilities. Outside several leisure pools offer a different swimming experience.

Kowloon Park Swimming Pool wasn’t just built overnight. It was part of a larger project. The Royal Hong Kong Jockey Club sponsored the expansion of Kowloon Park. The pool’s design combined the expertise of Derek Walker Associates from the UK. Simon Kwan and Associates a Hong Kong firm also contributed. BuroHappold handled the engineering. Shui On acted as the main contractor.

A fascinating fact is the pool’s original scoreboard. It was cutting edge for its time. This bilingual HK$6 million scoreboard was the most sophisticated in Hong Kong. It even had a special terminal for inputting Chinese characters. This advanced technology impressed visitors from China. They came to see its capabilities.

Another interesting detail is the main pool’s adjustable depth. This innovative feature allows changing the water depth for different activities. The pool also utilized ozone disinfection. This reduced reliance on chlorine treatment.

The Kowloon Park Swimming Pool has seen upgrades over the years. From 2007 to 2009 major improvement works took place. The indoor leisure pool became a training pool. A trampoline room was also added. The pool even hosted the 2009 East Asian Games. Facilities for officials marshals and media were added for the event.

Today Kowloon Park Swimming Pool continues its legacy. It’s a vital part of Hong Kong’s sporting and recreational landscape. Thousands of swimmers enjoy its impressive facilities every year. The pool’s history and innovative design make it more than just a place to swim. It’s a testament to Hong Kong’s ambition and commitment to recreation.
